Xiphophorus kallmani

Xiphophorus kallmani   Meyer & Schartl, 2003

Affiliation: southern swordtail

IUCN status: data deficient

Distribution: Laguna Catemaco, Veracruz, Mexico (lake tributaries)

Known locations (existing/former): 1/1

Habitat description: Distribution is poorly studied; recorded in several small streams draining into the lake, also in the lake itself; usually soft bottom with mud and organic material; current probably slow (may change during the year) – more information from habitat is needed.

Description: Relatively large species with individuals reaching a standard length of approximately 8.5 cm. Both males and females display one to four dark red horizontal stripes along their flanks, with the mid-lateral stripe being particularly prominent and almost purple. Another typical feature is the brassy colour or glint.

Variability: While the species maintains a consistent colour pattern, slight variations in the number and intensity of lateral stripes may occur among individuals.

XWG status: not yet actively managed

Represented in aquaria: rarely

Known issues: The species’ restricted range makes it vulnerable to environmental changes and habitat disturbances within Lake Catemaco and its affluents. Potential threats include pollution (from farming and human settlements), habitat degradation, and competition from introduced species. In human care, Xiphophorus kallmani requires careful attention to water quality to prevent stress-related health issues.

Known collections or populations: all populations are generally labeled “Lago de Catemaco” or “Laguna Catemaco” etc.
